In honor of Earth Day, The National Whistleblowers Center will host a special training seminar: “Protecting Environmental Whistleblowers.” The training will take place on April 21, from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm, and is open to environmental activists and attorneys, who can participate in person at the National Whistleblowers Center or via teleconference.

Anthony Sacco is the former general manager of the Broadview-Westchester Joint Water Agency, which supplies drinking water to suburbs west of Chicago. Then he reported to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency that the Agency had fabricated water testing reports. According to his complaint filed in Cook County Circuit Court, he discovered that the agency had been fabricating reports and log books asserting Broadview’s water was safe, even though “the village water had not been adequately tested in several years.” The Chicago Tribune reports that Sacco's suit alleges that Agency records claimed to use test sites that do not exist. Sacco is seeking damages for wrongful discharge in violation of the Illinois Whistleblower Act. Cases like this show why our environment and our health depends on strong protections for whistleblowers.
