Today the National Whistleblower Center (NWC) announced the release of The New Whistleblower’s Handbook: A Step-by-Step Guide to Doing What’s Right and Protecting Yourself (Lyons Press 2017). This updated resource, authored by leading whistleblower attorney Stephen M. Kohn, brings the most comprehensive and authoritative guide to exposing workplace wrongdoing up-to-date with new information on wildlife whistleblowing, auto safety whistleblowing, national security whistleblowing, and ocean pollution whistleblowing.
This easy to read, consumer’s guide includes ten new rules for whistleblowers and, with over 200 new pages, updates on key areas of whistleblowing, including wildlife whistleblowing, auto safety whistleblowing, national security whistleblowing, and ocean pollution whistleblowing. It also includes a “Toolkit” for international whistleblowers.
This essential guide explains nearly all federal and state laws regarding whistleblowing, and in the step-by-step bulk of the book, presents over thirty must-follow rules for whistleblowers—from finding the best federal and state laws to the dangers of blindly trusting internal corporate “hotlines” to obtaining the proof you need to win the case. It also highlights the possible dangers of internal reporting and what to know before blowing the whistle.
In addition, the author created a special online resource for each rule to accompany the book that provides key laws, legislative history, cases, articles and videos for each rule. The online resource provides on-the-go information for whistleblowers to know their rights before they blow the whistle and what steps to take to protect themselves.
“Whistleblowers are often unaware of the laws that exist to protect them or the steps they must take to secure a monetary reward for reporting fraud or wrongdoing like wildlife trafficking. The New Whistleblower’s Handbook was specifically designed to help navigate the maze of whistleblower laws,” said Mary Jane Wilmoth, a board member of the National Whistleblower Center. “Knowing your rights can make the difference between securing your rights or obtaining a large monetary reward.”
In addition to explaining the laws covering whistleblower rewards, The Whistleblower’s Handbook also explains how employees can save their jobs by qualifying for protection under fifty separate federal anti-retaliation laws. These laws can protect whistleblowers in many segments of the economy, from food safety to consumer protection and environmental enforcement. The Whistleblower’s Handbook covers topics such as taping conversations at work, removal of documents and what proof is necessary to win a retaliation case.
